Microwave Oven High-Voltage Diode Selection Guide

1. Function of the HV Diode in a Microwave Oven

The high-voltage diode in a microwave oven works together with the high-voltage capacitor to form a half-wave voltage doubler circuit. It converts the AC output from the high-voltage transformer (typically ~2,000 Vrms) to DC, doubling the peak voltage to approximately 4,000–5,000 VDC to power the magnetron .

If the diode fails (shorted or open), the magnetron will not receive sufficient voltage, and the microwave will fail to heat.

2. Key Selection Parameters

Symbol

Typical Value for Microwave Diodes

Selection Guidance

Peak Repetitive Reverse Voltage

VRRMVRRM

4,000–12,000 V (most common: 9,000–12,000 V)

Must withstand transformer peak output + margin. Standard microwave diodes are rated for line frequency (50/60 Hz) use. Inverter microwaves require different diodes (see Section 4).

Average Forward Current

IF(AV)IF(AV)

350–500 mA

Magnetron typically requires 300–500 mA. Select diode with rating ≥ original specification.

Peak Surge Current

IFSMIFSM

150–250 mA (varies by model)

Handles startup inrush current.

Forward Voltage Drop

VFVF

6–10 V (at rated current)

Higher than standard diodes due to internal series construction. 10V is common for 9–12 kV types .

Reverse Leakage Current

IRIR

< 10 µA at rated voltage

Higher leakage indicates damage or poor quality.

Reverse Recovery Time

trrtrr

Critical distinction – see below

Determines compatibility with standard vs. inverter microwave designs.
